HUPMOBILE at Science week in Södertälje

One of HUPMOBILE’s partners, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, together with AstraZeneca, Scania, Södertälje Science Park and Södertälje municipality, organized Science week in Södertälje, Sweden. The event was run during 4 days in January 2020. Science week had around 5 000 visitors in 143 seminars and workshops about digitalisation, sustainability, entrepreneurship, community development and research.

HUPMOBILE project was reflected upon in two KTH’s sessions, one of which was focused on presenting a ‘Simulation 4.0’ concept enabling i.e. logistics operators plan and test services and processes in a risk-free environment, while the other summarized research projects run at KTH Södertälje.

Simulation 4.0 concept is being upgraded by the Production logistics research group at KTH by redefining the simulation process with the help of digitalization and integrating the principles of sustainability, production systems achieve better results. In HUPMOBILE, the developed simulation-based model may be used for individual optimization or for being embedded in a multi-stakeholder participatory approach (workshop setting) for fostering common understanding and holistic solutions, optimizing the flows from a multi-stakeholder view.

Due to the last decades’ progress in simulation technologies, data science, and automation - the industry now can deliver products, services, and information with increasing emphasize on a sustainable future. Thus, in addition to HUPMOBILE, current work on the production logistics in Södertälje involves seven other projects (SCARCE II, DigiLog, SMART PM, C-PALS, LOVIS, UniLog and C-PALS) implemented in close cooperation with the industry.

Masoud Zafarzadeh, PhD student involved in the testbed explains, “A problem frequently faced by the industry is a lack of visibility of material as this is transported, stored, and used in a factory. Simulations help us increase transparency and gives access to different levels of an organization about what is happening and why.” As of the now the research group is due to present its latest results in a series of international conferences in Europe, Asia, and the U.S.
