Searching ways to improve urban mobility with reducing congestion, CO2 emission and the number of accidents is a common challenge to all major cities in Europe. The recent emergence of the concept of 'smart cities' will address these challenges. One of the key areas in the development of Smart Cities is transportation, where cities can implement various systems and services for better mobility for their Citizens.

Under the scope of HUPMOBILE project the city of Turku is involved in restructuring its passenger railway connection to the port area. To find a comprehensive overall idea for the area as well as various development alternatives the city of Turku in cooperation with 
the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA) and the Finnish Association of Landscape Architects (MARK) has organized Linnanniemi (Castle Town) idea competition in Spring 2020. 

HUPMOBILE’s expert partner KTH Royal Institute of Technology in cooperation with the Logistics Association PLAN and  Södertälje Science park  had organized Research & Application Conference – PLAN 2020 on October 21 in online format.  The conference was participated by various stakeholders and speakers and featured 3 parallel sessions – Engineering to Order, Service management and Digitalisation throughout the day. 

HUPMOBILE Online Conference held on November 26 and 27, 2020, welcomed 46 different participants, from 27 cities and 12 countries - ranging from Finland in the north to Namibia in the south, and from Portugal in the west to Malaysia in the east.  During both days of the conference, participants were involved in very constructive and engaging discussions.

For all of us the year 2020 under COVID- 19 pandemic situation is challenging. Indispensable in these times is to intensify our work on mobility behaviour. In particular, we can see even acute needs and higher demand for sustainable and resilient mobility systems.

In HUPMOBILE project City of Turku is working on the reorganisation of passenger rail transport in the port area. The surroundings of Turku Castle and the harbour are set to undergo a major redevelopment in the coming decades. Although the change will not be visible just yet, there is an extremely interesting and significant stage ongoing and shaping the future of the Linnanniemi (Castle Town) area.

During three days in mid-September, 2020, the City of Riga hosted the first Baltic Sea Region Mobility Summit, organized in partnership by the three EU Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme projects: cities.multimodal, BSR electric, and SUMBA.

Within HUPMOBILE project, City of Turku is working on a reorganisation of passenger rail transport in the port area. The goal is to develop a concept and a detailed plan for new railway access to the passenger harbour in the Linnanniemi (Castle Town) area.
