HUPMOBILE results used in teaching

Marketta Kyttä (Aalto University, DBE) presented the results of Turku region survey results and the accompanying mobility lifestyle personas that were done during the HUPMOBILE project with the students in two seminars this spring. In both seminars, the results regarding the varying mobility lifestyles of the residents of Turku region were presented as a part of a larger group of studies that reveal the varying ways people use urban space and adopt preferences for various travel modes. In these studies, both the stated lifestyle preferences and the actual everyday practices have been studied simultaneously using public participation GIS (PPGIS) methodology. Also, the associations with perceived health and quality of life are revealed.

The seminars where the HUPMOBILE survey results were presented:

  • YTK:n Pitkä kurssi-  program, that is a further education course for Finnish urban planners. Various urban user groups were presented during this seminar.
  • Aalto University Course Urban Experience (SPT-E5020) that is a master level course in Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering programme and attended by students with diverse backgrounds. The angle of presentation was based on how to utilize experience-based data in planning processes with the title” Kokemusperäisen tiedon hyödyntäminen suunnittelussa” (in Finnish). See more information about the presentations in the attached slide sets.

What kind of personas were presented during the seminars?

Four personas were identified during the online Maptionnaire survey:

  1. pro-sustainable urbanites,
  2. multimodal price-conscious residents,
  3. time-conscious suburbanites, and
  4. auto-oriented residents.

These personas represent four groups of people with different neighborhood preferences and travel attitudes. These groups also differed in terms of socio-economic characteristics, their travel behavior in different seasons, their preferences for future mobility services and their perceived health and life satisfaction.
